hi Katherine! i love Breton's Evening. it reminds me of Jean Francois Millet's The Angelus. while Millet's painting exudes calm and thanksgiving after a day's toil, Breton's speaks of a certain discontent or boredom due to the peasant girl's countenance. nevertheless, these are both beautiful and i could put them together side by side.
Evening, the last painting, reminds me of a painting by Jules Bastien Lepage I saw at the D'Orsay Museum in Paris a few years ago. I'd never heard of him but they had this amazing exhibit. He was a naturalist and the painting is called Les Foins.
@Karen K. I love Lepage's painting of Joan of Arc, so lovely. Yes, his subject matter and use of colors is similar to Breton. :) How lovely that you were able to see Lepage's painting in person!
@Caroline Helstone: Yes, it is very Hardy, perhaps Tess?
@Ao Bibliophile: I knew of Millet's The Gleaners but hadn't seen The Angelus before. Yes, it does have that similar look, particularly the lighting. Although as you mentioned it doesn't have the restlessness of Evening.
