The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
Considered one of the first mystery novels. I have the annotated B&N edition on my Nook and after reading Rebecca's review of it feel it's time to read it.The Professor and re-read of Villette by Charlotte Bronte
Villette was drawn from Bronte's experiences but it was written later in her life and the overall tone darker and somber. I'm curious to see how she approaches her first novel The Professor, which deals with the similar theme of unrequited love and if there will be parallels between the characters of Villette's John Graham and the Professor or if he will be more similar to Monsieur Emannuel.
Middlemarch by George Eliot
I started Middlemarch a few years ago but another book caught my fancy and it was set aside. As Mrs. Gaskell's female contemporary, I'm finding myself intrigued by Eliot. They are often compared with each other and I've learnt a few things about her through my research of Gaskell.I've seen and enjoyed Daniel Deronda, Silas Marner, Adam Bede, and Middlemarch; so I'm very much looking forward to delving into her writing.
The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth
Edgeworth has the connection of being Jane Austen's favorite writer and as if that isn't enough to tempt me to read her works she is also connected to the maternal family of Mrs. Gaskell.

I want to do that too soon: compare The Professor and Villette. I've read Villette already -- one of my favorites. I own The Professor but haven't read it yet.
We're both reading The Woman in White. Can't wait for your thoughts. :-)
I rather liked 'The Porfessor' when I read it a few years ag. Apparently CB said her feelings for it were "paralleled by those of a doting parent to an idiot child" :)
Good selections. I adore MM--in my top 5 reads of all time. We can read Little Dorrit together. I thought about adding Villette to my list as well, but I can't commit to it :)
Really enjoyed Woman in White--wonderful book with interesting characters.
I would like to read more of Maria Edgeworth myself...maybe next year.
@Jillian Can't wait to read your comparison of the two in the future.
@o lol. I guess by her comment she thought the novel rather flawed?
@JaneGS Thank you, Jane! Yes! I saw Little Dorrit was on your list it would be such fun if we read it at the same time! :)
Excellent list! I'm also planning on reading The Woman in White, Villette and The Professor, all for the first time.
I'm very excited for this challenge because I have been talking about starting to read more of the classics. Good Luck to everyone!!!
What a wonderful time you're going to have reading your way through your selected books. I've read them all, except the Maria Edgeworth - for some reason I have never read any of her work, so perhaps now is the time to catch up.
Look forward to your Edgworth review. Not read that book but I do love her writing.
I almost chose Collins's The Moonstone, having reread The Woman in White a couple of years ago and loving it, but The Moonstone would've been another reread. I also almost chose Lorna Doone. Maybe I'll get to it one of these days, especially if inspired by what you have to say about it.
I meant the reverse: I read The Moonstone a couple of years ago, and I almost chose The Woman in White for this challenge.
Great idea! I loved both The Woman in White and Lorna Doone! Hope you enjoy them too...
Great list. You will enjoy The Woman in White. It is a fantastic book and a page turner. :)
I hope you like Middlemarch. I read it this year and loved it. I also read Silas Marner this year and I'm becoming a huge Eliot fan!
I'm also a HUGE Eliot fan...have you read "The Mill on the Floss"? One of my all-time faves. I've thought about Middlemarch but it looks huge! This year, I'd like to finish her "Daniel Deronda". I love the movie version of that!
Hi Heather. I haven't read The Mill on the Floss yet and I just purchased a copy of Daniel Deronda. I'm looking forward to both of them. Middlemarch was long, but oh so worth it!
@Emily Barton: I've seen the adaptation of the Moonstone with Greg Wise and Keeley Hawes, I plan to read that one later too! Looking forward on reading your thoughts on Women in White!
@MissDarcysLibrary: Thank you!
@Amanda: Yes, I cannot wait to get started I'm debating on reading either it or Middlemarch first.
@Heather Day Gilbert: I haven't read any of her works yet. But "Mill on the Floss" is on my list for the future. I'm of fan of Mrs. Gaskell and her novella "The Moorland Cottage" is believed to have inspired Eliot's "Mill on the Floss," so I must read it so I can join in on the debate. :) Agreed, the adaptation of Daneil Deronda is wonderful!
@TBM Looking even more forward to Middlemarch. I've heard wonderful things about Eliot.
I've included The Woman in White on my list as well! Can't wait to read it. Great picks!
