Announcing: A Classics Challenge

by Katherine Cox In , , | 94 comments»

The Challenge

Read seven works of Classic Literature in 2012
Only three of the seven may be re-reads

How Does it Work?

I've organized this challenge to work a little like a blog hop. I hope this will make it more interactive and enjoyable for everyone.

Instead of writing a review as you finish each book (of course, you can do that too), visit November's Autumn on the 4th of each month from January 2012 - December 2012.

You will find a prompt, it will be general enough that no matter which Classic you're reading or how far into it, you will be able to answer. There will be a form for everyone to link to their post. I encourage everyone to read what other participants have posted.

  • What if I'm not sure I can participate every month? Don't worry, the main goal is to read seven Classics. Try to participate in at least three prompts throughout the year
  • What if I'm still reading the same book as last month? That's ok!
  • What if I'm not reading something for this challenge during one of the months? You can choose to either skip that prompt or answer about the Classic you've most recently read.
  • What is considered a Classic? A work that transcends time. Usually it's well recognized but there are many lesser-known gems too.

Join the Challenge

Anyone who loves to read and has a blog is invited
You can join at anytime

  1. Write a post on your blog with a list of the seven works you hope to read in 2012 and why you chose them-- but don't feel bound by the list.
  2. Please include a link back to this page in your post, so others can learn about the challenge and join us.
  3. Fill out the form at the bottom, linking to your post.
  4. Check back on the 4th of each month.

If you need a little help choosing what
to read Wikipedia has a few lists here.
If you have any questions please let me know!

Jillian Says:

I'd love to take part in this, but I'm already signed up for Sarah's Classics Challenge. Could the two be combined?

If I take part, I'm not sure I could participate every month...

Katherine Cox Says:

Certainly! Thank you for the link, I might have to sign up for her challenge too.

That's a great question, I edited my post to include it:
"Don't worry, the main goal is to read the seven Classics. Try to participate in at least three prompts during the year."

Jillian Says:

Okay, great! Thanks! :-)

Felicia Says:

Going to give this a try! I haven't picked my seven yet. Although I think a re-read of North and South will be in the works.

Elegant Female Says:

Please disregard the first enterance, I posted the wrong link. (So embarrassed)

Katherine Cox Says:

@Jillian So glad to have you joining!

@ElegantFemale/Felso That's ok, I went ahead and deleted it so only your correct entry is showing. :) Thank you for joining. So glad to see you started a blog too! Looking forward to reading it.

Jillian Says:

Thanks Katherine! My announcement post will go up tomorrow morning. :-)

akika Says:

I've just signed up :)
Now I need to decide what to read ... that'll take a while.

o Says:

I'm very much up for this, and so excited to be planning my 2012 reads :) I'll pop up a post in the next hour or so.

btweenthecovers.com Says:

I'm happy to have found out about your blog and this challenge from Jill. I'm looking forward to this (and to keeping up with your blog)!

Risa Says:

I like your idea, Katherine! I read Jillian's sign-up post and hopped on over. I think I'll be reading quite a few classics next year as well, so while I have a list up as per your requirements, I've a feeling I'm going to end wondering which ones to post as part of your challenge! :D

Debbie Rodgers Says:

I'd love to join this but I really need to know what you consider to qualify as a 'classic'? If I do this, I want to do it in the spirit in which it was intended.

Katherine Cox Says:

@akika It took me a few days to condense my list down to seven books. lol. Glad to have you joining.

@o Welcome to the challenge, thank you for joining! :) I just saw your list, great selections, many that are on TBR list. I love the Classics... and thankfully there are so many of them.

@btweenthecovers.com Delighted to have you joining, Heather. :)

@Risa Thank you! :) Yes, I hope to read more than seven next year too and couldn't decide which one's to post for this challenge. Thankfully we have Sarah's challenge to post the another ten books. lol. So many great books to read.

@Debbie Rodgers I think a Classic is a work that transcends time. Usually it's well recognized but there are many lesser-known gems too.
If it helps, here is another list of Classics.

Debbie Rodgers Says:

I'm linked up!

Lit~Lass Says:

I'm sure I'll read more than seven, but this looks fun.

charlottereadsclassics Says:

Sounds great, I just signed up. I really like the sound of the interactive element to it and your list is really good too :)

JaneGS Says:

Love this challenge and the format--classics tend to be long, so not having it depend on reviews but prompt-driven is brilliant.

fleurfisher Says:

I'd intended to give up challenges next year, but this is very appealing. And I like the idea of prompts, because I often feel presumptuous reviewing great writers.

Katherine Cox Says:

@Debbie Rodgers Thanks for joining!

@Lit~Lass Me too, I want to aim for double that but I thought seven would be a reasonable amount for those who maybe are just starting to delve into the Classics. :) Delighted to have you joining.

@JaneGS and @FleurFisher So glad you both like the idea of the prompts. :)

MamaMunky Says:

This is a great challenge!

MamaMunky Says:

My blog post about this challenge is going to go up sunday, just so you know. Thanks for hosting!

Tracy Says:

This challenge is perfect for me - count me in!

Hellen Says:

This challenge is great! I'm in, too.

Katrina Says:

I wasn't going to do any more challenges but this should fit in with what I intended to read anyway. Thanks for taking the trouble!

Allie Says:

This is a great challenge! I look forward to joining in!

Shann Says:

I just found your blog and love the idea of this challenge. The blog hop questions should be fun, thanks for hosting :)

Jean Says:

I too was full up on challenges, but since this one won't actually require *more* reading out of me, I would love to join the discussion!

Shelley Says:

What a great format for a challenge! I'll make a list and post about it soon.

William Says:

I've signed up for this as part of the Book Challenge Addict Challenge and look forward to finalizing my list of books soon. Looking forward to it.

Margaret @ BooksPlease Says:

I like this idea and have posted my list - which I'll probably change when it come to reading.

Jedediah Says:

Nice concept, I'm looking forward to this!

ChrisCross Says:

Oh I like this idea, and I'd love to join in, if I may.. but so many books to choose from... I'll whittle my list down, write a post and link up.

Sarah Reads Too Much Says:

I hope you don't mind me joining yours as well - I really love the discussion aspect you are adding to help encourage reading classics!

Sarah Says:

Sounds like a great idea - I have a crime fiction blog though so my classics will need to havea crime element. Shouldn't be too difficult.

ChrisCross Says:

There, the list is done!

ChrisCross Says:

Sorry, it's me again... gremlins in my computer mean the link is linking to a previous post - and I had to post it on my blog several times. Do you want to delete the link and I'll start again?

Katherine Cox Says:

@Mama Munky My pleasure, thank you for joining!

@Tracy, Hellen, Katrina, Allie, Shan Jean, Shelley, William, Margaret, and Jedediah So glad to have you joining us!

@ChrisCross I went ahead and fixed the link, so no worries there. :) Thank you for joining!

@Sarah Reads Too Much I don't mind at all, delighted to have you! :) I plan to join yours too.

@Sarah Ooh! I know The Woman in White is considered one of the first mysteries. Looking forward to seeing your list! :)

GeraniumCat Says:

Lovely, a challenge which fits in with the reading I'll be doing anyway! The prompts will really encourage my to write about my choices.

Emily Barton Says:

Looking forward to it. Can't wait to get started.

Cat Says:

Love the idea of the prompts and look forward to participating.
Beautiful button, too!

Jaquandor Says:

I'm on board and looking forward to getting started!

notesonanovel Says:

Sounds like a fun challenge, the prompt aspect sounds really intersting. Now just need to figure out my picks. Looking forward to it!

Peggy@Peggy Ann's Post Says:

Count me in! Have my list ready and waiting!

Cathy Powell Says:

I like the sound of this challenge - I wanted to read all of Jane Austen's books after reading 'The Jane Austen book club' which I haven't achieved yet. I have only read two of Ms Austen's books in the past. There are plenty of other classics that I haven't read.

Lady In Read Says:

Am looking forward to this. Have my post linked up and will add the list of books to it soon.. (already have a few from the other challenges that will work for this, including many/all? from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen challenge)

Lisa May Says:

I'm looking forward to this, especially to the prompts. Sorry I forgot to mention in my post why I chose those books.

Whitney Says:

Yeah for classics! Thanks for hosting this great challenge.

Amanda Says:

I have been meaning to read more classics next year, since I've sort of neglected them this year. This is going to be great!

Judaye Says:

This is going to be so much fun. Can't wait to get started.

Elisa Says:

I discovered your challenge a few days ago and decided to take part. My first blog challenge ever so I hope I can do it. Thanks!

Lit Addicted Brit Says:

I love how you've combined a challenge with discussion posts. I always tell myself that I should be reading more classics so this'll help out with that! Really looking forward to reading some more 'worthy' books :)

purple moonbeam Says:

This is such a wonderful idea! I like the idea of the prompts, I'm curious to see what you have in store.
I feel a bit ashamed of myself for not having read as many classics as I could, I much prefer them to the novels of today.
A bookstore in my area is closing down and I bought loads of (lesser known) classics at its clearance sale. So there is no dearth of books and therefore no excuse for me not to read and thus partake in your awesome challenge :)

Silsbee Says:

Thanks so much for hosting this. I hope to do it justice. :)

Anne Says:

Thanks for hosting, I am looking forward to doing this challenge!

I remember Delight Says:

This sounds like the kind of challenge I need lol. I have so many classic books stocked up that I have to read but never seem to get around to. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up. Looking forward to doing the reading and the prompts are a cool idea to get people thinking about what they are reading.

Melanie Boudwin Says:

I'm looking forward to reading seven of the books that I've been intending to read for ages! This is exactly the motivation I need to actually do it. Thank you for hosting!

softdrink Says:

I love how you've set this up. Looking forward to seeing the discussion questions!

Jessica @ O. Alouette Says:

Thanks so much for hosting this challenge! I'm really excited to participate.

Patricia Says:

I am so happy to have found your new challenge and another beautiful blog of yours. I look forward to the New Year of reading and taking part in this challenge.

flexnib Says:

Sounds like a great challenge, and I'm looking forward to your prompts!

TBM Says:

I just signed up. I'm looking forward to all the reading and the prompts. It will be a fun twist! Thanks for hosting!

Lindsey Sparks Says:

I like the idea of having posts responding to prompts. It will be something a little different! Should be fun.

Phaedosia Says:

I want to try and read weightier books in 2012--this challenge will definitely help keep me on my toes. Thanks for hosting!

Heather Day Gilbert Says:

This is so fun! I just did the Deja Vu blogfest and had a blast meeting new writing bloggers. And now, a chance to meet new lovers of classics! I can't guarantee I can read them all (busy year ahead), but I will try. I love those who love classics!

Heather Day Gilbert Says:

Also just wondering if there's a way to get the html or whatever we need to get that classics challenge photo link on our blogspots? It would be a helpful reminder to me to check in every 4th day of the month!

Katherine C. Says:

@Heather Day Gilbert Thank you for joining! :)
Certainly, just replace the [ with < and the ] with >

Darlene Says:

Hi, there! Do all formats of books count (bound, ebook, audiobook)?

Thanks for hosting!

jennifer Says:

This is a great idea! I just signed up and posted my list on my blog...please drop by and check it out! Talk to you on the 4th!

inlibrisveritas Says:

I'm really glad I found this! I love classics but lack the motivation to read more then one or two a year. So this is perfect.

CharmedLassie Says:

Just signed up. Concentrating on the books I've had on my shelves and haven't read yet. Should be fun!

Cassandra Says:

I love your challenge and would die to participate, but somehow I can't seem to be able to sign up :(

I have already written my post, confident that signing up would be no problem, but I can't find the form to sign up! Is there something wrong or is it my fault? Please help me, it would be such a shame if I could not take part.

Helen Says:

I've posted my list of books on my blog. I'm looking forward to this!

Katherine Says:

@Cassandra: It's a mixture of a technical error with the website I got the sign up form and my fault for getting the form for January set up. I'm hoping it will correct itself later today. I'll be sure to add your information to the form. Thanks for signing up.

PherenV Says:

Hi. I would love to participate as well but I don't have a blog. Do you accept people in my situation? I do have an account on librarything if it helps.
All the best.

readramble Says:

Some classics of world lit in translation will probably fill my dance card. Looking forward to this. -Fay

Katherine Says:

@PherenV I do ask that participants try to answer at least three of the prompts throughout the year.If there is a way you can post your answers on Library Things, then I'd be happy to have you join.

Otherwise if you're willing to post your answers in the comments I'd be fine with that too. Please let me know if you have any other questions. :)

alberta ross Says:

Think I may well enjoy this - not to many rules:) can manage it by clearing some of my TBR pile (and overlap with TBR challenge) struggling with Sarahs at moment because of the romance and play catogorie but am going back to the shelves maybe I have a greek play somewhere there!!! will post and get back

reader Says:

Thanks for hosting!

Debbie Says:

Am looking forward to this challenge. It's been ages since I've read a classic. Seen lots of dramatisations on the telly, but reading them will be better.

Please have a gander at my list.

Happy reading.

bibliophilica Says:

Late joining, but looking forward to participating. I have at least seven classics on my TBR list anyway. I'll look forward to seeing what everyone else will read too. Thanks for hosting this challenge.
-Jay

Jo @ Booklover Book Reviews Says:

This is just the push I need to find more time to read classics. They sit on my Kindle for so long unloved, always being overlooked for a shiny new title - poor things.

Thanks for hosting Katherine!

PherenV Says:

Thanks Katherine. I can definitely do a minimum of three prompts. I'll check if I can use LibrearyThing for this but if not I don't mind using the comments. Thanks again!

I'll chose the 7 books over the next days and come back with the list.

Silsbee Says:

Hi,

I'm wondering about one of my titles, Langston Hughes's The Ways of White Folks. It is a book of his stories. It is over 300 pages, though, so it's still a substantial book. Will it count, even though it is not a novel? Should I pick something else?

Thanks.

CrissyR Says:

This sounds great. Looking forward to choosing which classics to include. Thanks!

Katherine Says:

@Silsbee That is fine.

It doesn't even have to be substantial. It's the quality of the overall story and characters that I think make a classic. Delighted to have you joining!

Crissy Says:

Sorry - meant to say, if you fancy having a peak at my list you can find it, and a link to my blog, here:
http://literaturelane.wordpress.com/challenges/
Thank you!

alberta ross Says:

sorry thought I had submitted linky but seems I hadnt and there it was waiting for me to do so - so patient:) have posted about the 2 classic challenges on http://albertareads.wordpress. com
looking foward to the challenge

Julie @ Knitting and Sundries Says:

I like that there can be crossovers, as I'm already signed up for the Back to the Classics challenge (so those are the books I initially listed for this one), BUT I have other classics on my TBR list that I may get to first, so being able to change my list is great! Thanks for hosting!

Manisha Says:

I am new to Reading Challenges, and very excited about this one :) Thanks for hosting!

Michelle Says:

I will be participating, and will post my first blog entry about it on January 30th. I am very excited to be a part of this reading challenge!

Megan Stroup Says:

Alright! I've been needing a good excuse to catch up on my classics. :) And I love the idea about the monthly prompts - thanks for hosting!

Carolinabookworm Says:

I'm excited for this!

Britta Kirk Says:

This is such a fantastic Challenge. I've been looking for a way to include classics in my reading list, and I discovered your blog! Wonderful! I'm looking forward to looking back at your past entries, and seeing what's coming up!

Melisa Says:

Hi Katherine,
You made an awesome challenge! So we would not only read classics but also dig deeper. And we will never know what you're gonna ask next month, so yes it is very challenging.
I didn't make an "opening" post (the post that mentions what classics I will be reading), because I will certainly read more than seven, I got a HUGE pile of classics on my shelf, and I am truly a fan of them. From the beginning of 2012 until today (27/2/12) I have read 3 classics.
I have posted for January and February challenges, however, all of my postings are in Indonesian language (cause I'm Indonesian), I hope that's OK.
